Martin Sharp and Robert Whitaker

Image
In June 1966 Australian artist Martin Sharp arrived in London, after an overland journey from Sydney via South East Asia. One of the first people Sharp hooked up with was fellow Australian photographer Robert Whitaker, who had been in the UK as an official photographer for The Beatles. Sharp remained in resident in London through to the end of 1968 prior to returning to Sydney. During that period he worked with Whitaker on a number of occasions, most notably in development of the record cover art for Cream's LP Disraeli Gears. Less well known are the various collaged photographs the pair worked on, especially during the period 1966-7. Some of these are reproduced below. 1. Easter school holidays, 2021 - Tuesday 13 to Friday 16 April, Ingenia Holidays resort and caravan park, Broulee. We take the kids and a school friend down the coast from Wollongong approximately 222 km to Broulee, south of Bateman's Bay and just north of Moruya. I had never been there before, but I was always interested in the place due to the watercolor view taken by English watercolourist John Skinner Prout in 1841. Prout had visited the Illawarra around that time, followed by a short stay with his large family over Christmas 1842/3 at the then small settlement around Wollongong Harbour. As a result, I wondered what he was doing at Broulee in July 1841? Also, I was keen to see if I could identify the precise location from which Prout took his sketch, which was subsequently reproduc...

MO : Prose 2001-4 | Prose 2021+ | Songs 1972-4, 2021-3 | Prose Writings #2 The following prose was substantially written in connection with membership of the South Coast Writers Centre (SCWC) from March 2021, plus other inspirations, such as music and song, dating from November 2020. Some of the SCWC material is mere 10 minute writing exercises and very rushed; others have been edited ad infinitum..... It is all quite Dada-ish really. --------------------------- Badger No more badgering or unwelcome conversations Trying to upset you, argue with, berate you Finding joy in seeing, feeling, you cry, die. You hurt and desert me abandon and ignore accuse and abuse as the angers rises and gets much more 'n more No!; Stop! I say Hang up the phone, shut the door No more, no more! I just stand here alone now all alone n...
