Michael Organ in Parliament 2002-2004

Senator Kerrie Nettle,  Michael  Organ MHR and Senator Bob Brown 23 October 2003

I, Michael Organ, was elected to the House of Representatives in the Australian federal parliament, Canberra, at a by-election for the seat of Cunningham in October 2002. I was the first member of the Australian Greens elected to such a position. At the time there were two Greens senators in Canberra - Bob Brown from Tasmania and Kerrie Nettle from New South Wales. I served until the following general election in October 2004. During that 2 year period, parliament sat in Canberra for 32 weeks and my staff and I were very active participants. I was also involved in extra-parliamentary activities such as membership of the Select Committee on Bushfires, and a foreign country visit to Taiwan. My activities in parliament are listed below in regard to the delivery of speeches, notices of motions, and questions to the government. There were 214 such activities, involving standing in the House 186 times to deliver said speech, notice of motion, or question to the government. Other activities, such as attending question time, supporting motions, listening to various speeches - including those by visiting dignitaries - or attending divisions to vote on legislation, are not listed. Questions Without Notice were delivered on the floor of the parliament during Question Time to the Prime Minister John Howard or one of his ministers. Questions On Notice were in writing and appeared in the Hansard. Material was written by myself and my staff, including Allen Clarke, Carol Berry and Kristian Bolwell, with additional material provided by Sharon Callaghan and Damien Cahill. A detailed record of this activity is archived in the official parliamentary Hansard. A video record was also made. The National Library of Australia Pandora website contains an archive of my official website, which includes copies of all press releases issued by my office. These press releases often accompanied, or reported upon, my parliamentary activity.
