1. What is Nothing?
Nothing is the absence of something.
It could refer to a thought, feeling or statement, viz., Q: "What did you just say?" .... Ans.: "Nothing."
Nothing is simply a concept, and not a reality, which would negate it by making it something if it was real.
Nothing only exists in the context of an action whereby something has been removed from somewhere (e.g., there is nothing left) or has never existed (e.g. the universe did not exist prior to the Big Bang).
When we say "There is nothing in that box of toys", it is true in so far as we have taken all of the toys out of the box. Therefore the statement should actually say "There is nothing LEFT in that box of toys."
You cannot make something out of nothing.
The universe was not created from nothing; it was created from something.
(NB: God is the only intelligent entity that, by definition, can create something from nothing. All other entities can only make something from what has already been created. Therefore God created the material and non-material of which the universe was made.)
Science has never addressed this issue, apart from assuming there was something before, or there was the spontaneous and unexplained creation of something which, in a second, led to the creation of everything which is now in existence, as outlined in the following video.
How did "Nothing" exist before the Big Bang?, Space Matters, YouTube, duration: 28.46 minutes.
Of course, this video presents no explanation at all, and we are left with the original questions regarding the creation of everything and what actually is nothing.
In the context of human reality, there has never been nothing; there has always been something.
The Big Bang, for example, was created from something. It was not created from nothing.
The creation of something usually involves a creator, or creative source, e.g. God, Creator, Source, Cosmic Consciousness, The One.
The something of creation is usually in the form of energy or material.
Something is therefore composed of the physical reality and nothing else.
Therefore, nothing does not exist in the physical universe.
There was always something there, and that something is what we refer to as the physical realm or physical reality, and the non-material or energy realm.
Nothing else exists beyond this.
That physical reality or realm is composed of (1) material and (2) non-material.
Material is usually matter that we can touch, see, and is macroscopic.
Non-material is microscopic, atomic or quantum, seemingly invisible, but actually real and composed of matter.
There also exists the absence of matter, replaced by energy or something which can nevertheless be experienced, as in thoughts, feelings, emotions.
The latter can also be listed as contained within a non-physical reality.
Matter and energy are connected - E equals M times C squared, as Einstein revealed to the world.
"Nothing", as in the form of energy, is therefore not part of the physical realm.
The physical realm and the energy realm is all that exists in the universe.
Nothing does not exist.
It has never existed - this is a concept which humanity cannot rationally comprehend.
The concept of nothing, like the concept of God, is one which ultimately comes down to belief.

2. An Answer
There is no answer to the human question: Why is there something, rather than nothing? Why is there anything at all? (Leslie and Kuhn 2013)
The mystery of existence, Closer to the Truth, 4 September 2020.
There is, however, a possible scenario which can be presented to explain the existence of the universe in which human kind is present.
That scenario is basically as follows:
The universe was created by an intelligent entity - God, Creator, Source, Cosmic Consciousness - and the origin of that entity, or those entities, is unknown and unknowable in the present human context. Religions and science / philosophy have attempted to explain that concept.
For humanity to try to explain the origin of reality beyond a point of origin of Source is pointless.
Human minds / consciousness cannot accept, or has not accepted, the premise that something can be created out of nothing, where nothing is the absence of anything - material or non-material, extradimensional or spiritual.
By nothing we here mean absolutely nothing, i.e., no physical reality, no ideas, no emotions, no dreams, no consciousness - fundamental or otherwise.
Degrees of nothing are proposed by humans to facilitate understanding of nothing (Kuhn 2020).
However, if we vary our definition of nothing to include something, then we are cheating. Yet, that is what most philosophers and scientists have chosen to do.
A good example is the removal of the toys from toy box to create nothing; or to deny the existence of something which once existed, such that "There is nothing to see here."
Nothing is the only unreality in existence, for there must always have been something if there is existence.
And God is the only explanation for that creation of something out of nothing.
